THE RAVEN TRILOGY

The Raven Flies Hrafninn Flýgur

The opening strike of the "Raven Trilogy" hurls us into Viking‑Age Iceland, where a boy spared by raiders returns decades later as a silent blade of vengeance. Gunnlaugsson films the lava fields and black‑sand coasts as if they were runes—harsh, beautiful, inexorable. Praised as the greatest Icelandic film ever made and Iceland's Oscar submission for 1985, it announced a new, uncompromising voice in world cinema.

In the Shadow of the Raven Í skugga hrafnsins

The saga deepens into a snow‑bright meditation on desire and destiny. A forbidden love ignites between rival clans just as Christian missionaries arrive, forcing ancient honor codes to collide with tremors of a new faith. Shot in sweeping 2.35:1 widescreen and submitted for the 61st Academy Awards, it expands the trilogy's moral terrain—asking whether loyalty survives when the gods begin to fall silent.

The White Viking Hvíti víkingurinn

Gunnlaugsson's most ambitious canvas yet follows Askur, a pagan prince taken by King Olaf Tryggvason and forced to bear the cross back to Iceland. Longships crash through storm‑torn fjords, ritual fires flare against cathedral shadows, and an entire epoch teeters between axe and altar. Released in multiple cuts—including a five‑hour TV epic—this film set a new benchmark for scope in Nordic cinema.

Embla Director's Cut of The White Viking

Premiering at the Reykjavík International Film Festival, Embla is the definitive, 174‑minute vision Gunnlaugsson fought to unveil. By shifting the narrative center to Embla—the captive priestess caught between pagan rite and Christian conquest—the director restores lost poetry, enriches every character arc, and closes the trilogy on his own, fiercely spiritual terms. A rare example of a director's cut that doesn't just add scenes—it rewrites legend.

(2007 - The director's cut of The White Viking)

In the Raven Trilogy, Icelandic author and film director Hrafn Gunnlaugsson visualizes the Viking Age directly from the Icelandic Sagas in a way that only an Icelander could. In 1984 The Raven Flies put the Icelandic film industry on the world map and hailed by the Berlin Film Festival with the 50th verdict. Followed by the Viking Film In The Shadow Of The Raven, and finally now EMBLA - a Viking film trilogy was born.

For the first time the ancient religion of the Norse gods Odin and Thor was visualized in contrast with the new faith of Christianity brought from abroad. The Raven Flies Trilogy has since become legendary as the most authentic Viking films ever made, and said by several critics to share many generic features with the films of Sergio Leone, Sam Peckinpah, and Akira Kurosawa.

Comments By Celebrities On The Raven Flies

Epic story-telling at its best.

– Ingmar Bergman (speech at Reykjavík Arts Festival)

One Of My Favorite Films

– Astrid Lindgren (speech at the Reykjavík Arts Festival)

Simple, powerful, controlled.

– Swedish Film Academy's verdict for "The Golden Beetle", Prize for Best Director 1984

An outstanding effort in combining history and cinematography. One can say: These images will survive...

– The Berlin Film Festival Committee

The most authentic-looking Viking picture anybody's ever made – nothing I've seen by American and English studios can match it. The director has the makings of a master to reckon with.

– Michael Ventura, LA WEEKLY

Has all of Leone's operatic scope combined with Peckinpah's knack for action, and Kurosawa's lifting imagery.

– Kirk Ellis, HOLLYWOOD REPORTER

A jolting, vivid tale played with all stops pulled out.

– SHEILA BENSON, LA TIMES

I never forget when I saw the film in New York back in the '80s. I had never seen that kind of film before. It was both thrilling and powerful, while it was simple and moving. True cinema.

– Director Joel Coen (interview with Thorfinnur Omarsson, Cannes 1996)

The film gallops along administering its own brand of creative justice in a dazzling fashion complete with sweeping images and an epic score. A stark, vivid environment, quite unlike Hollywood's vision; it waves in mythic quality to the action.

– Leonard Klady, LA TIMES

It is hard to recreate classical saga-literature on film, but I want to say you have really succeeded. You have made a Viking film that captures the atmosphere of that era better than anybody before you.

– Per Olov Sundman (letter to the director)

Heavy Viking Head – Work In Progress

Viking protagonist

🎬 Currently in Production - This epic Viking tale is currently in development

Heavy Viking Head - Original Version. A HEAVY VIKING HEAD (original title in icelandic: Svardagi) an original story By Hrafn Gunnlaugsson and Ólafur Gunnarsson. English Translation: Arnar Matthíasson A heavy Viking head Southern Europe in the footsteps of the Vikings AD 850 - where the grapes grow. FADE IN: EXT. A SPRUCE FOREST Through the tattered and large forest a man rides a horse bearing heavy burdens. It is GEIR(16)) the main protagonist of this story, the leader of a small group of Viking who go about robbing defenseless farmers and treat them brutally. Geir is a bit late after having robbed a church with success and most of his men have gone to their camp. The Vikings believe in the Nordic gods. Geir is brazen enough to dress in bishops clothes over his coat because he likes it and has bound his waist with a golden altar cloth. Over everything is a broad leather belt, branded with ancient Nordic runes - here after called the belt of runes. He has two large knifes in a bag on his back. It's autumn and a few leaves fall of the branches of the trees like butterflies. The horse is BEATEN and starts running heavily. Suddenly the horse falls over a string that appears out of the leafy undergrowth. The rider falls off and the leaves whirl and his cap falls over his face it can't be seen but cups, bells and holy crosses made of precious materials fall around him.
